History

Thirty years a teacher, then thirty eight more years , a model engineer.  My C.V. begins with bikes, old cars, lapidary, silver-smithing, musical instrument repair, clock making and repairing for local antique shop, steam locos and all that goes with it and finally; 3d printing.

I'm the last generation who can remember being in an air raid shelter as bombs went off close by and then going to school the next day to find two of the class had been killed in that raid.

I'm the last generation to remember the UK population of 33 million as 99.9% white.

I'm the last generation to remember a world with no plastic.

This is a Hunslet.  It's a replica of the WW1 engine used behind the lines.  I used a copy of the original GA plan bought from Leeds museum as a means of measurement calculations.

Passenger hauling on a running day at Ashton Court, Bristol.

Based on the 'Romulus' 0-4-0 which I lengthened and made into a 2-6-0 which stopped it bucking.

This is John Coleman driving my 'Bluebottle'.  When I lost touch with him he was building his 16th engine all 5" standard gauge and all immaculate to the last rivet. He used few drawings as he was a 'fag-packet' designer.

Kerr-Stuart 'Princess' class which ran on the Macrihanish to Campbell Town in Scotland. My first 7.25" engine made together at the same time as Jim Lewis the designer of the original. My engine had one sand box and his had two. Bristol SMEE have the copyright and sets of drawings for sale.

My last and best engine.  It is the 'Graf Schwerin-Lowitz' by Arnold Jung.  It runs on the Brecon Mountain Railway and they were kind enough to allow me access to the engine so that I could take photos and measurements.

The start of a busy day Ashton Court, Bristol.

These are a few photos of four of the engines which I designed and built.

This video is a day at the Bristol Model Engineers' track.  There are several views of my Arn Jung engine with me driving.

These are some of the other things I've made over the years.

These are a pair of adjustable boring heads  which I designed.  OK for light cuts.

This was one of my clocks. The popular John Wilding design. This is a link to my youtube channel where it was in for a clean. https://youtu.be/hE4fMIzhHv4?si=3uWod9vlPOKkve3h

This is my first engine. It's a Crampton broad gauge 5" which made it about the size of a 3.5". The design was in 'Engineering in Miniature', but never finished.  I still have it as a 'Mantle Piece' job.  A bit limited in pulling power but very fast. I recently gave it a re-fit. This is the link.

This is the Bristol SMEE designed end mill sharpener.  They have copies of drawings for sale.

This is an English Civil War sword handle which I restored for a collector.

This was a clock wheel cutter from a design I found.  Not too good as it was not very rigid and accuracy couldn't be relied on.
